SHAP SHAP : A Dance Documentary
David SNIPES | Lagos | Nigeria
As an Dance artist and choreographer, I have always wanted to tell stories with my art, expand my career as much as I could, and gather experiences from different works of life and infuse them in my process of artistic growth. Applying for the Bakanal De Afrique fellowship was considered as a step in this process, I could relate to the theme of the fellowship and how it influences my career.
My project which is a dance documentary focuses on OKADA which is one of the main mode of transportation in Lagos state. the Okada is mostly used because of its ability to dodge, pass through traffic and arrive at a passenger’s destination on time. This project will highlight the different experiences of using the Okada in different areas of Lagos. The project will also show the Okada as a representation of the fast paced life of an average Lagosian. The perseverance and determination to arrive at your destination on time regardless of any obstacle that presents itself on your journey, the stubbornness to go against all odds just to be on time and the satisfaction that comes with arriving on time. Lagos life is all about the hustle and bustle, recorded as the most populated state in Nigeria, everybody enjoys the rowdy nature of life in Lagos. Infusing dance in carrying out a documentary on Okada was a way of bringing the story to life.
