Freaks 001: "The Underground"
Mal The Oddity | Brooklyn | USA
I’m a songwriter, producer, & video artist under the moniker Mal the Oddity. When I saw that the theme for Bakanal was transportation, I was immediately intrigued because my work already invokes notions of travel & space. I tend to draw inspiration from places I’ve been to or imagined, and preserve them through my music & video practice. This fellowship gave me an opportunity to delve deeper into a method of transportation near and dear to my heart: the MTA. Freaks 001: “The Underground” is dedicated to the freaks of nature: the community I’m surrounded by in my hometown of Brooklyn, NY who are often swept to the side or outcast by society. Entering into this project, I was thinking about counterculture & dominant culture. I’m claiming the subway as a vehicle of NYC’s counterculture, and embarking on a fantastical exploration of those who dwell and travel underground. We are the ones who push the envelope, hustle, and make the city what it is today. Despite the city’s economic realities, the power of gentrification, and the history of redlining, we’re still here.
