The journey of a thousand conversations begins with a thought
Applying for Bakanal De Afrique "Mi Soon Come" presented me with a unique opportunity to express myself, create new work, interact with other talented African artists from across the world and witness how our rich culture and art influence the world. I believe we are all made up of stories and everyone has a story to tell; the older we get, these experiences, interactions and stories build up. The mind goes places; transporting one mentally by manifesting itself in words using the brain as its vehicle.
Here, using a typewriter as a metaphor for the vehicle, my art is an imaginative piece which explores how an individual is mentally transported through their individual or collective stories, interactions and communication.
While my medium and style varies. I find my work evolving with mental awareness and social commentary as emerging focus. As I engage these areas, I am aware that during research and production of my art, new areas of interest may arise and lead to a new or next body of work. I like to explore various media, ranging from, metal, clay, body filler, fiber glass and experiment with unconventional materials. In my various approaches to creating art, each piece could consist of multiple pieces to narrate a story or I could use a single piece to drive home a point. I like to engage viewers through my art because other than the fact that I am expressing myself and my views, I realize that people are drawn to the power of a story and a piece of art can begin powerful conversations. If my work can spur the viewer to look twice, contemplate, inspire, trigger a reaction and birth a thought that lingers on, that makes me a fulfilled artist.
